History of Plainridge Park Casino in Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has licensed three casinos for operation within the state, with Plainridge Park being one of them. Located inPlainville, a town situated near Interstate 495 and about twenty miles south of Boston, this resort-style casino was originally opened as a racino, providing both thoroughbred horse racing and slots.

In the end, it would be another company that received approval for what is now known as Plainridge Park, though not without initial controversy. The gaming license was granted to Ken Sze on May 29th, 2013, and Plain Ridge Corporation began construction in August of the following year.

With an original price tag estimated at $225 million, a revised plan pushed forward by then-CFO Chris Kelley provided that this sum would be split between two separate structures: one housing slots and another for entertainment. The overall development cost eventually settled on was around 170 million dollars.

After significant delays, Plainridge Park opened its doors as a racino in June of 2015 to accommodate a limited selection of slot machines along with live thoroughbred racing. Some sources reported an initial revenue figure of more than $60 million from slots during the month following their introduction.

The venue’s racetrack initially featured five days of live racing each week, though this has been decreased over time in response to diminishing track attendance figures and industry-wide challenges.
